Father Not Necessarily Like Son: “I Have Come Here To Listen, To Look And To Learn”

The last of the three presidential debates was supposed to focus on foreign policy, but it was obvious that both candidates were set on continuing where they left off from the previous debate: the U.S. economy and unemployment. When Bob Schieffer, the moderator, steered the candidates back to topics such as national security; Iran; the […]

An Encounter With Mikheil Saakashvili Before His Rise To Power

Earlier this month, the ruling party in Georgia conceded defeat in parliamentary elections to the opposition Georgian Dream coalition, led by the reclusive billionaire businessman and philanthropist, Bidzina Ivanishvili. What caught my attention, was not the newsmaker, Bidzina, who is destined to become the new prime minister, but rather his bitter rival, the president, Mikheil […]

Let The Fire Burn: Man Vs. Wilderness

I learned very early on in life the destructive force of wildfires while growing up in Southern California. It seemed like every year from mid-summer until the middle of autumn, warning signs were posted in the foothills above where I lived, alerting people to fire danger. Some days the signs would read “high,” other days […]

The Hunt: Man Vs. The Wilderness

There is a beautiful scene in the third act of the movie “The Deer Hunter” when Mike (Robert De Niro) returns home from Vietnam and goes on a hunting trip. In the early morning, he sets off by himself with his Remington hunting rifle slung over his shoulder in search of a buck. This is probably […]

The “Branding Police”: The New Reality For The Olympics

Like many people who watched the Olympic games these past two weeks, I was sad to see them come to an end. For me, it was not about the USA and its celebrity sportsmen and women and how many medals each won (which seemed to be all the announcers at NBC cared about), rather, it was […]

For me, it was not about the USA and its celebrity sportsmen and women and how many medals each won (which seemed to be all the announcers at NBC cared about), rather, it was being exposed to sports that otherwise get little or no attention in

60 Year Anniversary: Farouk And Narriman, Egypt’s Last Royal Romance

This past month marks the 60-year anniversary of the July 23 revolution in Egypt that ended the 140-year rule of the Mohammed Ali Dynasty. Coincidentally, the anniversary comes at the same time Egypt ushers in a new era. After toppling Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year monopoly of power, the Egyptians have elected Mohammed Morsi, the first democratically […]
