WASHINGTON — The founder of Salon.com just published a biography of one of the Cold War’s most influential figures, and it contains controversial allegations that tie the CIA to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Almost 60 years after Kennedy’s killing, questions continue to swirl over whether the shooter Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, or was supported by a conspiracy of allies that some believe had government ties. David Talbot’s new book, “The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government,” is renewing the debate with allegations about Dulles and his purported links to the assassination after Kennedy fired him from his post as the first civilian leader of the CIA.

In his book, Talbot, an independent journalist and the first editor-in-chief of progressive news site Salon, traces the rise to power of Allen Welsh Dulles, a diplomat and former lawyer who later led the CIA while it carried out some of its most notorious misdeeds. He was aided in his influence over the U.S. government by his older brother, John Foster Dulles, who became Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Before joining the ranks of the Washington elite, the brothers were partners at the powerful Wall Street law firm, Sullivan & Cromwell.

Allen Dulles took the helm at the CIA under the Eisenhower administration, and was allowed to remain in the role during most of Kennedy’s presidency. During a lengthy interview with Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman, Talbot explained that Kennedy initially supported the CIA’s agenda, but gradually began to break away over the agency’s increasingly violent plans for Cuba after the “Bay of Pigs invasion,” a failed CIA-backed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro in April 1961:

“So he was kind of sandbagged by the CIA. He did go through with [the Bay of Pigs invasion], but he had no intention of widening it into an all-out U.S. military assault on the island, on Cuba. But that’s what the CIA had in mind. … [W]hat they hoped and what they planned was that a young President Kennedy, as this invasion was bogged down on the beaches of the Bay of Pigs, would be forced then to send in the Marines and the U.S. Air Force to topple Castro.

But Kennedy resisted, and kept the U.S. from being led into a nuclear war over the Cuban missile crisis. According to Talbot, “that was the beginning of [Kennedy’s] break” from the CIA.

Talbot alleges that although Kennedy dismissed Dulles from his post at the CIA in November 1961, after the Bay of Pigs, Dulles continued to meet with government officials and influence U.S. policy, essentially creating a secret government that prioritized a corporate agenda over the rule of democracy in the U.S. — including plotting the assassination of Kennedy, who they saw as a barrier to that agenda.

Talbot claims that Dulles had multiple meetings with government officials also investigated by the House Select Committee on Assassinations, a Congressional effort begun in 1976 to examine lingering questions about the killings of Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr.

More tellingly, Talbot told Goodman that Dulles spent the entire weekend of Kennedy’s killing at “The Farm,” a secretive CIA enclave in Virginia:

“Well, he’s there while Kennedy is killed, after Kennedy is killed, when Jack Ruby then kills Lee Harvey Oswald. That whole fateful weekend, he’s hunkered down in a CIA command post. So, there are many odd circumstances like this.”

While the book’s detailed historical research is being lauded in the independent media, not everyone is convinced by the assassination theories. James A. Warren, a visiting scholar at Brown University and military writer for The Daily Beast, praised “The Devil’s Chessboard” while casting doubt on some of Talbot’s conclusions:

“That Allen Dulles exercised enormous power and abused that power in myriad ways; that he ordered assassinations of undesirables abroad; that his CIA destabilized foreign governments in the Third World based on grossly exaggerated assessments of Soviet subversion; that he integrated high-level Nazi intelligence agents into CIA and West German intelligence networks—all these allegations are clearly borne out by the facts presented here, and confirmed by the work of many other investigators.”

However, Warren was less sure about the JFK assassination ties:

“The evidence that Dulles was the ringleader of a network of hardline, Cold War national security types that constituted a secret government, and that that ‘government”’assassinated a president, is brilliantly and alluringly presented—so well presented, in fact, that one could almost believe it. But not quite.

For one thing, Talbot’s defense of these allegations rests far too heavily on hypothetical scenarios and intricately stitched together reconstructions of clandestine schemes, most of which are too heavily larded with innuendo, gossip, and hearsay to be credible.“

While the continuing controversy over Kennedy’s death is unlikely to end any time soon, Talbot’s book makes what is perhaps an even more important claim — that Dulles and his allies oversaw a turning point in American history, when the democratic rule of the many became a plutocracy, the rule of the wealthy few. As Russ Baker, publisher of independent media site Who What Why, wrote in his analysis of the book: “Dulles’s job, simply put, was to hijack the US government to benefit the wealthy.”

Underlining the importance of Talbot’s contribution to the understanding of American history, Baker noted:

“No one can possibly understand the precarious state of American democracy today without scrutinizing the often secret path the country was taken on by those in power from the 1950s to the present.”

Watch JFK to 911 Everything is a Rich Man’s Trick on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1Qt6a-vaNM This video put a lot into perspective and shows conclusively that Kennedy was murdered by the Herrimanites of which the first Bush prez is a member and the coordinator of the eight assassins assigned to killed Kennedy.

Riddled with errors. A trick all right

        • jstroncheck

For example. I am confident you will be silent.

    • Lee Harvey Oswald wasn’t anything more than a scapegoat.

      • BARNESACLE

        A scapegoat for whom?

        • Whoever set him up to take the blame for the assassination so they wouldn’t be investigated or prosecuted for it. Then they had Jack Ruby kill him before anyone could get much of his side of the story. Then they killed Ruby so he couldn’t anyone who he’d killed Oswald for. This is standard gangland and intelligence covering of one’s butt.

          • BARNESACLE

Oh really? Then why was Oswald allowed to walk away from the School Book Depository, the only person to flee the scene. Why wasnt there a getaway car waiting for him to stuff him in the trunk and dispose of him at an obscure location? Can you give us an identity for “whoever” and “they”. Who was Ruby working for? He killed Oswald on impulse, he had gone to Western Union office across the street to wire some rent money to one of his strippers. Oswald should have left one hour earlier but was delayed by a US Postal Inspector who wanted to interview him about buying the rifle through the mail. After Lincoln was killed 2 or 3 guys who looked like Booth were hung by mobs.

            • Were you there?

              • BARNESACLE

read the Warren Commission report. And where were you?

                • If the Warren Commission is the truth, why won’t they release all of the files, 50 years later? I’m only interested in science fiction, and there is nothing scientific about the Warren Commission report, aside from a twisted form political science. I was sitting in front of the television, home sick from school, when Christie’s father told us that the president was dead.

    • Forebearance

CIA involvement in the JFK assassination is not “news”. Neither is LBJ-Mob-Mossad involvement. Kennedy had made many enemies in the establishment by 1963. The fact that he fired Allen Dulles as CIA director and Dulles wound up leading the Warren Commission guaranteed the official explanation of the killing (“crazed lone nut”) would be a total whitewash.

      • BARNESACLE

Just garbage! There is no evidence of collusion by Dulles or anyone else. People who work in the CIA or FBI, etc are patriots. There is no news in your statements. As Edward R Murrow told Joe McCarthy accusations arent proof. Yeah, Dulles controlled the Warren Commission, 10mos of investigation, 20,000 interviews and he manipulated it all. The “true findings” were masked. HOGWASH. Vincent Bugliosi who prosecuted Manson wrote a book himself, completely verifying the Warren Commission report, I suppose Dulles controlled him from the grave. Talbot is just another hack trying to make money off the tragedy, and dumb lone nuts like Forebearance buy into it.

While “The Rich Don’t Always Win”, they didn’t take the set backs handed to
them by FDR lying down…….and he not only didn’t complete “the mission”,
but the removal of “common law and equity” to be replaced by “codification”
and the UCC happened on his watch.

The oil depletion allowance and the lack of “competition” produced by war,
gave them sufficient time to “reassert” themselves during the 20 years it
took to fully implement the UCC in every state….in and unprecedented
era of technological advancement……and benefit to the lower classes,
which was largely “illusionary” and experienced under the cloud of the
“cold war”…….this was sufficient to usher in the second 20 year phase,
between 1960 and 1980, where the public funds expended by government,
were now exploited and corruption of government began in earnest.

The final phase which began with Reagan has returned us to those thrilling
days of yesteryear……proving once again that “rich people” have never been
very intelligent……but they have always been greedy and self destructive.
( and they are quite willing to destroy everyone else in the process.)

This time…….they are going to Succeed!!!!!!

Europian Bankers who started the CIA, as well as Dulles, and are still covertly funding the CIA… as a vast network of Insider trading sorces. The CIA, at its conception… was for the Power Elite, the military industrial complex… and Europian Banker Owned Corporations. It was not designed for the safty of the American People, or any people. The Dulles Brothers, General Cabel, and a few others had to stop Kennedy from destroying the corrupt Banker Hold on everything that makes them money. They, the Bankers, simply do not care for the People, ANY people, except to use them as pawns to make money. The MOB, Mafia, ..etc… was just another tool … like Dulles, that the Bankers use to further their Global Agendas.

The problem with your grand conspiracy is that the world just doesn’t work that way. The truth is, these are a bunch of not very bright guys. You’re giving them way too much credit. Oswald, who some months earlier had taken a shot at General Edwin Walker, acted on the happenstance that the motorcade route had just been set to go right past his workplace, and took his rifle to the job that day.

              • Forebearance

Well — “Dr. Watson” — the sun has actually risen a few times since Nov. 1963.

The House Select Committee on Assassinations reconvened in 1992 and concluded there had been a conspiracy and tossed that “lone nutjob” whitewash by the Warren Commission in the ashcan once and for all.

When an unknown Dallas newsman named Dan Rather reported on Nov. 25 that Kennedy’s head “rocketed forward” from the fictitious rear shot, it only took the release of the Zapruder film for the world to see that instead of “rocketing forward”, Kennedy’s head was slammed back by the killshot. But by then Rather had already begun his meteoric rise as a network star for his role in cementing the official lie.

To explain away the triangulated gunfire, the Commission had to invent the laughable “Magic Bullet Theory” that a single bullet hit Kennedy in the neck, backed up, did a complete 180, then hit Gov. Connally in the chest, wrist and thigh (for all us fans of Looney Tunes Roadrunner cartoons).

That the bolt-action Mannlicher-Carcano (one of the most notoriously inaccurate and poorly made rifles on earth) was somehow wielded with laser-like precision in a mere 6 seconds by Oswald (a mediocre marksman in all his military fitness reports) is a howler on its face. However, the Mannlicher was the weapon of choice of the Cuban rebels, so it was dropped in the mix to bolster the “Castro-did-it” argument.

We also have the deathbed confession by DC fixer E. Howard Hunt who (along with future Watergate burglar Frank Sturgis) was arrested in the adjoining railway switchyard disguised as hobos on Nov. 22, that CIA was involved.

I mean, really, not everyone has been holed up in an underground bunker surrounded by MRE’s and yellowed stacks of the Nov. 22, 1963 Dallas Morning News for the last 50 years.

                • pensaments

                  : ) Good one!—well delivered…

                • BARNESACLE

Totally stupid. The 2nd bullet passed through JFKs neck and it Connally. It would have to be a magic bullet if it didnt. JFK was raised higher than the front, and Connally was slightly inboard. If U look at the Zapruder film (and U havent) JFKs head moves forward at first then jerks back. Its not predictable how the body will react once the brain is damaged, also, JFK was wearing a back brace from waist to chest which would influence his movement.
Oswald learned to shoot in the Marines and practiced with his rifle, not the best in the world, but nevertheless good enough. CBS once conducted an experiment on a range with same distances and angles with several shooters, some exceeded the time parameter. Your criticism of the rifle is not evidence. (see pensaments above about delusion)
You can go back to your bunker now.
