Terror isn’t imported, it’s exported. The Miami Model uncovers our country’s role in global terrorism, global police militarization and the shared resistance of the 99% worldwide.
Here’s what the ACLU had to say in 2005 about the trends in policing started by Timoney:
“The ‘Miami Model’ was a police tactic designed to intimidate political demonstrators, silence dissent, and criminalize protest against the government policies,” said ACLU Greater Miami Chapter President Terry Coble, referring to the City of Miami’s law enforcement strategy during the FTAA meetings. “If this type of police action is allowed to continue, our country will have lost one of our most basic rights, and we will be on the road to a totalitarian government.”
Unfortunately, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly seem more endangered than ever in 2016. The Intercept reports activists in Cleveland, Ohio are already receiving threatening visits from the FBI and police ahead of the Republican National Convention. And the ACLU of Pennsylvania recently sued Philadelphia over free speech restrictions at the Democratic National Convention.
And, as Goldfield points out, Timoney went on to consult with Bahrain’s brutal, anti-democratic (but nonetheless U.S.-backed) monarchy during the Arab Spring.
