Democracy Spring is a week long series of protests held April 11 to April 18 this year, but you wouldn’t know it from the mainstream media. The Intercept reported that cable news networks devoted just 30 seconds to the protests, despite over 400 arrests on Monday.
Here’s how the event organizers described the event:
Now is the time to take mass nonviolent action on a historic scale to save our democracy. Following a ten-day, 140-mile march from Philadelphia to Washington DC, thousands are gathering this week in our nation’s Capital to demand Congress take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in our politics and ensure free and fair elections in which every American has an equal voice.
Fortunately, independent journalists were there to pick up the slack. Eleanor Goldfield of Act Out! On Occupy shared these videos from Democracy Spring’s first two days. In the second installment, Goldfield herself was among many activists arrested for justice.
Next week on Occupy.com, be sure to look for a full-length special episode of Act Out! devoted to Democracy Spring.
