In this week’s Fracked Earth News, the top global climate change headlines include:
__Peru’s huge, 3.3 million acre Sierra del Divisor national park (here and here) “strategically secures the final link in a 67 million-acre Andes-Amazon Conservation Corridor.” About 1 billion tons of CO2 annually will be sequestered by the Park.
__Another Greenland glacier rapidly retreats as ocean waters warm its base while warm air at the surface causes more melting. Greenland’s ice sheet “is losing several hundred billion tons … per year,” representing “a third of the total global sea level rise.”
__Despite lip-service to alternative energy, and promises to be off coal by 2025, the UK’s government is now pushing gas and providing subsidies to continue fossil fuel suppliers. A pattern has emerged: the UK government promises one thing but doesn’t do what’s necessary to meet that promise, such as developing alternative energy.
