Throngs Fill Park To Protest Pro-Trump Bigots Who Can’t Even Draw Proper Swastikas

December 9, 2016 By José Negroni 2 Comments

Two incorrectly drawn swastikas including the words “Go Trump” were found spray-painted on playground equipment in Brooklyn Heights last month.

Days later, on a Sunday morning, thousands of peaceful demonstrators opposed to vandals defacing Brooklyn’s Adam Yauch Park overwhelmed the playground, smiling, hand-clapping, and carrying placards with messages of peace and love.

City workers painted over the graffiti in the park, which had been renamed in 2013 after Beastie Boys’ founding member, Adam Yauch. Yauch died of cancer in 2012.

Why I Want To Shut Down Rikers Island

October 19, 2015 By Cindy Sheehan for the Soapbox People’s Network Leave a Comment

Before my son was killed in Iraq, I wouldn’t say that I “respected” or “feared” authority—that’s never been in my nature. However, looking back, I think I was terrified of crossing the proverbial line. Relating my rude awakening and experiences since then, I know that the line is drawn by the violent empire and arbitrarily re-drawn whenever it suits the needs of the police state.

After my son Casey was killed in a U.S. imperial war based on lies and waged for profit and I became an anti-empire activist, I have been arrested too many times to keep track.

I stopped counting at 20.

Besides the frustration of being “popped” for exercising my so-called constitutional rights, the many, many hours I have spent in jail have been ultra eye opening to me.

October 7, 2015 By Dr. Milena Rampoldi Leave a Comment

David Andersson was born in France and has been living in New York City for the past twenty years. He is currently the Director of NYC Chapter of the Humanist Party and a member of Making Worlds: a Commons Coalition, a collaborative effort by Occupy Wall Street to explore the utility of the commons in creating a better world. David is also the coordinator of the New York Coalition to Expand Voting Rights (Ivote NYC) and has been a contributor with numerous opinions and press articles to Pressenza, International Press Agency.

Before forming the HP in 2009, David was the Director of Special Campaigns at the Center of Cultures for more than 10 years and co-founded the Diversity Center of Queens in Jackson Heights. David’s work has always been inspired by the teachings of Silo and his proposal of active nonviolence.

We interviewed him to talk about nonviolence and social change in our difficult period of time, characterized by ideological wars, cynicism, oppression, discrimination, racism, and desperate migration. We would like to thank him for his answers.
