Why The Dutch Office Of Medicinal Cannabis Doesn’t Want You To Smoke Marijuana

July 1, 2016 By Patrick Dewals Leave a Comment

The Dutch Office of Medicinal Cannabis (DOMC) is a government organization responsible for the availability of medicinal cannabis in pharmacies. This medicinal cannabis is used for medicinal and scientific purposes. Through the DOMC, Dutch pharmacies provide their customers, whom have a doctor’s prescription, with medicinal cannabis (MC). The agency is led by Dr. Marco Van de Velde, medical biologist, and is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health and Sport.

Patrick Dewals: Doctor van de Velde how long has the DOMC existed?

Dr. Marco Van de Velde: In 1998, the former minister decided to set up the bureau. But because of the regulatory and legislative work associated with the drafting of a new government agency, it took until 2001 before the office was actually installed and only in September 2003 came the first MC on the market.

PD: What are the different functions of the DOMC?

Rape Case In Qatar About More Than Just Dangers Of Tourism

June 14, 2016 By Tara Lighten Msiska 2 Comments

A 22 year old Dutch woman on holiday in Qatar was jailed for nearly three months on unclear charges after reporting her rape to Qatari authorities.

Her drink was spiked while she was at a hotel bar with friends and she realized she’d been raped when she woke up in an unfamiliar room. The alleged attacker, reported to be of Syrian nationality, was not tried for the rape. Instead, the woman was immediately arrested after alerting police and incarcerated.

She has now been found guilty of “illicit sex” and being drunk. Sex is illegal in the Gulf state unless it occurs between married persons. She was given a one-year suspended sentence, three years of probation and fined $823. It is expected that she will be immediately deported.

Hypocrisy Of Free Speech: By The Powerful, For The Powerful, Against The Powerless

January 23, 2015 By Yasmin Ahmed Leave a Comment

It is crucial that we maintain some principles such as the freedom of expression, since the right is, by any means, essential to every individual. As much as we disagree with one another, this fundamental right should be upheld.

The problem however arises when this right is abused and the powerless minorities in an already toxic environment are affected by it. Charlie Hebdo was stigmatising Muslims and, in the West today, there is an apparent normalisation and standardisation of this discourse. In fact, political parties, in particular far right groups, are ‘Islamising’ every issue.

After the tragic events, we saw some of the hypocritical world leaders march for the same free speech which they often oppress. The King of Jordan, who sentenced a Palestinian Journalist to 15 years in prison last year; Prime Minister Netanyahu, whose forces killed 17 journalists in Gaza last year; Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Shoukry, who detained Al Jazeera staff as well as detaining Journalist Shawkan. Surely, if the UK government was any better and truly upholds absolute free speech it would not have forced the Guardian to destroy the hard disk containing the Snowden files either.
