Global Warming: Human Problem, Human Solutions (Climate Change News)

March 10, 2016 By Kate Lanier Leave a Comment

Every week, Fracked Earth News collects the top climate and energy headlines , including:

__Almost 50% of working women worldwide are engaged in agriculture. If given the same resources as men, women could boost food production in developing countries by 4%, reducing “the number of undernourished people in the world by 150 million.”

__This one’s been going on for years (and it’ll probably be back, because $$$$s), but, for now, the U.S. Forest Service halted development of “hundreds of homes, retail shops and hotels outside Grand Canyon National Park.”

__28 local gold miners working a wildcat mine near Tumeremo, Venezuela have gone missing. Officials are denying anything happened to initiating investigations. Locals contend murder and grisly disposal of the miners’ bodies occurred.

Biodiversity And Restoring Earth’s Balance (Climate Change News)

March 3, 2016 By Kate Lanier 1 Comment

Every week, Fracked Earth News collects the top climate change and energy headlines, including:

__124 nations are participating in a 3-year Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) study to access “the pace at which animals and plants are dying out.” They’ll cover least to greatest, “bacteria to blue whales.”

__11 huge dams are planned on the Mekong, in addition to the giant Wunonglong Dam China’s already built. Impact on life in and along the banks of the Mekong could be vast, destructive. Flowing from Tibet to the Mekong Delta, the river sustains rich biodiversity as it meanders along, supplying food that sustains “tens of millions of people.”

__Five Samarco mining company executives and one contractor are being charged with “aggravated homicide … for the deaths of at least 17 people caused by two of their dams bursting in November” in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

A Rocky Road To Independence From Fossil Fuels (Climate Change News)

February 25, 2016 By Kate Lanier Leave a Comment

Every week, Fracked Earth News collects the top energy and climate change headlines, including:

__Big Oil countries are struggling to achieve better oil prices. The “oil market currently remains oversupplied, above ground storage full, and Iran re-entering the global oil market.” IEA is “raising alarm bells about investment cuts,” rigs idled and 250,000 jobs lost while BP, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell and Total plan “large spending cuts.” Will countries respond by encouraging renewables or providing more subsidies for Big Oil?

__Pretty wild story: PotashCorp of Saskatoon and Agrium of Calgary are buying Western Sahara phosphate from a Moroccan state-owned company. However, “No country officially recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara,” and there’re pesky international laws and prohibitions governing “mineral resource activities in Non-Self-Governing Territories.”

__Nevada has taken the low road, “levying the highest charges to date [on roof-top solar, and imposing] those charges on existing customers as well as new ones.” SolarCity’s had to abandon Nevada, laying off 1,000 workers. Warren Buffett owns the huge NV Energy electricity monopoly.
