Mining The Earth & Fracking The World: Who’s The Murderer?

January 1, 2015 By Kate Lanier Leave a Comment

Kate Lanier collects global news of mining and fracking, as well as protest and alternative energy, including:

Burma (Myanmar): Police have killed one and wounded other protesters against the Letpadaungtaung mine run by Chinese operator Myanmar Wanbao Mining Copper Ltd. 500+ villagers in Aunden protested “construction of a 1,200-megawatt coal-fired power plant” earlier this month because of “extensive and irreversible environmental damage.”

Canada: The Yukon Supreme Court has ruled that “the pristine, fragile Peel Watershed [is now protected] from mining.” Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus and Na-Cho Nyak Dun First Nation Chief Ed Champion emphasize the importance of preserving such treasures. Another victory, as the federal government was cited for failure to consult with the Alberta First Nation Mikisew Cree, as required, on “changes that affect water and fisheries laws.”

Rhode Island: Class action suit filed by Rhode Island against Brazil’s “state-run oil company Petrobras over investor losses due to a corruption scandal.” Currently, some 39 people have been indicted for “corruption, money laundering and racketeering”—including some $3.9 billion in “‘atypical’ financial transactions.” RI’s suit names chief executives, by the way.

Revealed: How The Latest Defense Bill Supports Fracking On Public Land

December 16, 2014 By Steve Horn 1 Comment

The U.S. Senate has voted 89-11 to approve the Defense Authorization Act of 2015, following the December 4 U.S. House of Representatives’ 300-119 up-vote and now awaits President Barack Obama’s signature.

The 1,616-page piece of pork barrel legislation contains a provision — among other controversial measures — to streamline permitting for hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) on U.S. public lands overseen by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a unit of the U.S. Department of Interior.

Buried on page 1,156 of the bill as Section 3021 and subtitled “Bureau of Land Management Permit Processing,” the bill’s passage has won praise from both the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and comes on the heels of countries from around the world coming to a preliminary deal at the United Nations climate summit in Lima, Peru, to cap greenhouse gas emissions.

Sweeping The Globe: #MillionMaskMarch Impossible To Ignore

November 10, 2014 By Endarken 1 Comment

Over 400 cities worldwide demonstrated what a REAL “Wave of Action” looks like, celebrating Guy Fawkes Day (November 5th) by congregating in major city centres the world over to spread messages of awakening to their fellow citizens and commemorate the growth of the Anonymous movement.

Becoming ever larger with each passing year, the Million Mask March (known as MMM) 2014 marks the first major penetration of the event into mainstream media coverage, despite their desperate attempt to black-out MMM in previous years. With this year’s event covered by Reuters and The Guardian, and not just RT, it does seem that the MSM worm is turning. And the BBC have now learned the hard way that if you refuse to cover thousands of protesters converging on a major city centre they may well just bring their grievances to your front doorstep, leaving you little choice but to acknowledge their presence.

A collection of the best of the event media we have seen so far is below, for your viewing pleasure.
