Why The Dutch Office Of Medicinal Cannabis Doesn’t Want You To Smoke Marijuana

July 1, 2016 By Patrick Dewals Leave a Comment

The Dutch Office of Medicinal Cannabis (DOMC) is a government organization responsible for the availability of medicinal cannabis in pharmacies. This medicinal cannabis is used for medicinal and scientific purposes. Through the DOMC, Dutch pharmacies provide their customers, whom have a doctor’s prescription, with medicinal cannabis (MC). The agency is led by Dr. Marco Van de Velde, medical biologist, and is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health and Sport.

Patrick Dewals: Doctor van de Velde how long has the DOMC existed?

Dr. Marco Van de Velde: In 1998, the former minister decided to set up the bureau. But because of the regulatory and legislative work associated with the drafting of a new government agency, it took until 2001 before the office was actually installed and only in September 2003 came the first MC on the market.

PD: What are the different functions of the DOMC?

Female Genital Mutilation In The USA: A Forgotten History

April 19, 2016 By Dr. Milena Rampoldi 8 Comments

Female Circumcision and clitoridectomy were a quite common practice in the United States for 150 years. So FGM is not just an “African” phenomenon.

In this interview, the historian Sarah Rodriguez casts light on this dark side of history. I interviewed her about her book and her research about FGM in the U.S., a forgotten story.

Milena Rampoldi: Why did you decide to investigate female circumcision and clitoridectomy in the United States?

Sarah Rodriguez: When I was an undergraduate student, I read Alice Walker’s 1992 fictional story, “Possessing the Secret of Joy.”

For those unfamiliar with the novel, it is the story of Tashi, an American who is also a member of a fictional African tribe, her decision as an adult to undergo female circumcision in an effort to reconnect with her heritage, and then how she tries to come to terms with having been circumcised. What piqued my interest, though, was when Tashi met a white woman in the United States who lost her clitoris as a child at the hands of a physician in the early 20th century who used the procedure to treat her for masturbation. I was surprised by this part of the story, and initially thought Walker had made this up.

But, being both curious and in need of a research paper that semester for a women’s studies class I was taking, I went looking in old medical journals for references to clitoridectomy as a therapy for masturbation. And I found some – actually, far more than I anticipated I would find. Intrigued, I ended up not only writing a paper on this for my class, but also writing on the topic for my undergraduate honors thesis. I eventually wrote a book: “Female Circumcision and Clitoridectomy in the United States: A History of a Medical Treatment.”

Did Prison Contractor PrimeCare Cause Pennsylvania Inmate Deaths?

April 8, 2015 By Brian Sonenstein Leave a Comment

On March 27th, a jury in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, found that private jail medical contractor PrimeCare Medical Inc. was negligent, but ultimately not responsible for the death of 27-year-old inmate Travis Magditch.

The Magditch family sued PrimeCare and Lehigh County in 2012 after Travis was arrested for allegedly possessing drug paraphernalia and died of an asthma attack at the jail one day later.

The family’s attorney, David Inscho, told jurors this was Travis’ first time behind bars. He stated that he had “called his parents when he got there, begging to be bailed out.”

The local police offered to release Travis into his father’s custody, but having seen his son struggle with heroin addiction for two years, he decided against it. Mr. Magditch believed this decision would force Travis to “get help for his drug addiction” and enter rehabilitation.
