Cyberwarfare: Challenge Of Tomorrow

August 17, 2016 By Alice Donovan Leave a Comment

Computer hacking has become part of everyday life for the past few years as Internet-connected devices get been hacked left and right, but most times these are harmless, so-called “Internet of Things” appliances, like kettles or fridges.

But according to Boston-area hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess, it is attacked about every 7 seconds, 24 hours a day, and the strikes come from everywhere: hacktivists, organized crime, terrorists and even MIT students.

Nearly 1 in 3 Americans deals with some kind of health record compromise, and most of the time they are completely unaware it happened. This means that criminals gain huge amounts of information about people, including their social security numbers, phone numbers, addresses, and even their personal health information. Many of these types of information are much more permanent than even credit card numbers, and last forever. And most of these hacker attacks occur due to the sheer number of vulnerabilities in the security systems of hospitals.

Dr. David Bearman: Only 13% Of Doctors Learn Up To Date Info On Medical Cannabis

June 21, 2016 By Patrick Dewals 1 Comment

My search for an expert opinion on medicinal cannabis (MC) brings me to California. Since 1996, following a referendum, medicinal cannabis is legal in the sunny U.S. state. It is estimated that there are already more than one million California patients that use MC.

The cheerful Dr. David Bearman is an expert in the field of substance abuse. In 1971 he co-founded, in Seattle (Washington), the third US Free Clinic. He is a frequent speaker on MC, member of various advisory committees and testifies regularly as a scientific expert in court.

Your Dinner Vs. The Planet: The High Cost Of Meat

February 11, 2015 By Farhaanah Ali 3 Comments

Is it necessary for humans to eat meat at the scale we currently do?

Taking note of the sheer number of vegetarian and vegan diets practised everyday it is clear we do not need meat, even if we enjoy eating it. D’Silva, in her journal, written in 2000 for Compassion in World Farming Trust, wrote that cutting out “the costly inefficient factory farmed animal ‘protein converter’” would increase the amount protein we can get straight from the source. This would mean more people could be fed on less food, a positive step in reducing world hunger.

There are a number of potential health issues that may arise with the over-consumption of meat every day and for every meal; obesity has already become a big issue in America, and Europe is catching up. Nierenberg wrote in 2003 that eating meat every day is a more recent phenomenon — until the industrialisation of the process, meat was generally only eaten on special occasions and, even then, largely by the rich.
