VIDEO: The Irradiated States Of America

March 22, 2016 By Eleanor Goldfield 2 Comments

“Imagine an elementary school that’s only a couple of hundred meters away from a pit emitting radiation that’s four times as high as in long-term evacuation zones outside of Fukushima. Now imagine that in South Dakota.”

That disturbing image is the reality for students in South Dakota, who go to school near an open pit Uranium mine. As Eleanor Goldfield revealed in a recent episode of Act Out! that same story is playing out across the United States, and even more frequently near Native American lands.

Only A Green Economy Can Save The Earth, Say Scientists & Pope Francis

July 16, 2015 By Kate Lanier Leave a Comment

Every week, Fracked Earth News collects the top environmental headlines including:

__In Bolivia, Pope Francis called “for a ‘structural change’ to a global economy.” Capitalism is “the dung of the devil” for all the pain and suffering it causes; “land, lodging, and labor are ’sacred rights’”; true revolution must come from the people—soon. Can’t wait for September when he addresses the US Congress. His Holiness the Dalai Lama lends support to the pope.

__Environmentalists fighting to get in place international regulations protecting “deep sea ecosystems” before deep-sea mining for “nickel, copper and lithium … gold, … cobalt, manganese and other rare-earth minerals” commences. Deep seas are very slow to recover, if at all, from interruption.

__The US National Park Service planned to “stop selling disposable [plastic] bottles and let visitors refill reusable ones with public drinking water.” But the 200-corporations-strong International Bottled Water Association swung into action and an amendment to stop the NPS’ plan was added to a House budget bill, courtesy of Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-PA).

Obama’s Reactionary Doctrine For American Exceptionalism

February 20, 2015 By Burkely Hermann 6 Comments

In his recent State of the Union, Obama made many bold statements which people have said were “progressive” and hopeful. These include: his support for paid sick leave for American workers, a pathetic increase of the minimum wage to $10.10, meant to hurt the ‘Fight for $15’ movement; a promise to veto legislation that overturns deficient Wall Street “reform;” support for “affordable” quality childcare; minimal raises in taxes for the wealthy, which isn’t nearly enough; sorta free community college [1]; supposedly protecting “a free and open Internet,” and so on.

Obama also made a number of ‘firsts’ by mentioning transgender and lesbian people in his State of the Union, claiming that the United States government protects them (oh really), which seems great but ignores the fact that not only is Obama “a born again” evangelical Christian, but he has, during his presidency, allowed federal money to fund groups that supported the anti-gay bill in Uganda and “conservative faith-based groups affiliated with the Family Research Council, anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers and an entire network of evangelical abstinence-only educators,” according to an exhaustive investigation in The Nation.

It is important to focus on other parts of the speech, often missed by other analysis, which emphasize American exceptionalism [3], including a section where he hypocritically criticizes Russia for actions that the US has done in the past:
