According to Eleanor Goldfied, #DemocracySpring and #DemocracyAwakening, last week’s mass mobilizations in Washington, D.C., were “an organized, strong, diverse and powerful call to the powers that be that We The People are rising. That we refuse to accept a government bought and sold.”
The latest episode of Act Out! devotes the entire half hour to this exciting action.
This past week, thousands of people marched and were arrested on the steps of the Capitol demanding that the people’s voice be heard; that we the people, not money, be the driving force of our government. Democracy Spring organized a full week of actions – rallying, marching and risking arrest. Democracy Awakening organized the final three days with teach-ins, panels, rallies and marches, wrapping up the events with hundreds arrested on the Capitol steps. This video covers the whole week – the rallies, the marches, and several of the people involved in this strong show of people power vs. corporate rule.
Journalists like Goldfield are critical for events like this because the mainstream media either minimizes or outright ignores popular protest. On April 13, The Intercept reported that cable news networks devoted just 30 seconds to the protests’ first two days.
In a previous video, Goldfield reported on those early events, including her own arrest.
While corporate media ignored Democracy Spring and Democracy Awakening, others praised the event for raising awareness about critical issues like money in politics. Renowned activist and author Chris Hedges, one of hundreds arrested over the course of the week, said “revolution is in the air” at a critical juncture in human history:
Corporations will continue to strip us of our remaining rights, carry out the deadly assault on the ecosystem, impoverish workers, make a mockery of our democracy and cannibalize what is left of the country. The system of corporate power is incapable of reform. It must be destroyed.
We will have to do this together. No one will do it for us. And as the numbers in the streets swell—and I will be with the protesters in Washington again on Monday—the corruption of our political system becomes ever more apparent.
