1. Against all Odds, Bernie Sanders Wins Michigan
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won the Michigan primary with 50 percent of the vote compared to Clinton’s 48.1 percent. Until Tuesday morning, every poll pointed to a sweeping 20-22 point victory for Hillary Clinton. Prominent U.S. statistician Nate Silver even went as far as calculating Clinton’s chance of winning at 99 percent.
And even though the race was tight, Michigan is yet another example that nothing is decided on the Democrat side. Speaking on the day, Sanders announced that his victory in Michigan proves that he has support in every part of the country, promising that his campaign’s strongest days are yet to come.
2. Hillary Did Not Get the Expected Black Vote in the North
Hillary Clinton swept to victory in Mississippi, enjoying overwhelming support among Black residents across Michigan. This is in part due to her and Bill Clinton’s decade-long perceived engagement with the state’s Black community.
However, while Clinton’s support from Black voters is unanimous among the electorate in the Southeast and Southwest, Tuesday’s results show that she lacks the same level of support among Black voters in the North. The former U.S. secretary of state’s lead narrowed from 73 to Sanders’ 19 percent to 64 to 29 percent in the Northern states.
This is a promising sign for Sanders going forward and could prove crucial in the overall race.
3. Sanders Wins Largest Muslim Arab-American City in the Country
Dearboron in Michigan has the highest number of Muslim Arab-Americans in the country and Bernie Sanders, the Jewish social democrat, just won 67 percent of their vote.
4. Sanders Wins 81 percent of Youth Vote But Hillary Makes Gains
Sanders has consistently won the youth vote and Michigan proved the Vermont senator’s undisputed popularity among young voters once again. Sanders won a staggering 81 percent of the vote among the 18-29 age group, leaving Clinton with just 18 percent from the youth demographic.
Sanders even managed to win over New Hampshire youth voters in the primary he lost last week. However, Mississippi’s youth opted for Clinton, with 58 percent of the demographic voting for the former U.S. secretary of state.
5. Trump Keeps Expanding his Lead, Wins City with High Arab-American Concentration
Donald Trump won the Mississippi and Michigan presidential primaries, expanding his lead over Ted Cruz & co in the race for the Republican nomination. In Michigan, Trump captured 44 percent of the vote among those with “some college education” or less, also winning around half of the vote among those with annual family incomes under US$50,000, according to the NBC News Exit Poll.
On a side note, Trump also won Dearborn, a city with the highest concentration of Arab-American Muslims in the U.S., with 38 percent of the vote compared to John Kasich’s 33 percent. Meanwhile, Cruz is the projected winner of Idaho, a crucial victory he needed to keep his campaign’s momentum going. It is the Texas senator’s seventh state in the race.
