Donald Trump finally explained how he will force Mexico to pay for the wall he plans to build along the common border with the U.S. if he is elected president.
The real estate mogul sent a two-page memo to The Washington Post that has been largely criticized by analysts for its lack of feasibility and racist content.
With the subject line “Compelling Mexico to Pay for the Wall,” the text focuses in exerting pressure by blocking remittances sent by undocumented Mexicans in the U.S. if Mexican authorities refuse to pay for his 1,000-mile border wall which he estimates will cost US$8 billion.
Trump buttresses his ideas in the figures provided by the Central Bank of Mexico, which reports that during 2015 the Mexican economy was injected with about US$25 billion in remittances that nationals abroad sent home. If somehow his plan was enacted it would cripple Mexico’s economy.
Trump plans to halt remittances by tracking every bit of money that’s being sent to Mexico by ordering money transfer companies to verify the legal status of the immigrants who use the service.
Trump also plans to coerce Mexico by increasing trade tariffs and cancelling of visas. Trump’s constant statements against Mexicans have been rebuffed by Mexican authorities, including President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Meanwhile, Ford announced Tuesday it will build a new factory in Mexico with an investment of US$1.6 billion, which will create about 2,800 jobs by 2020.
